Ok, this has nothing to do with SS501, but it's important information if you want to know what's happening around the world. Check it out.
Sailing in a dump.
Underneath all this rubbish, even if it doesn't look like, there's a river. Citarum river on it's way through Yakarta, which today has the unfortunate honor to be the most polluted river in the world.
This river, that runs through Java island in Indonesia, provides the 80% of water to the capital Yakarta. It supports a population of 28 million people and offers a 20% of Indonesia's gross domestic product.
The fast urbanization and industralization along this river in the last 20 years has resulted in a huge increase of sewage without treatment, solid wastes and industrial effluents that affects public health and threatens the survival of poor fishermen's families.
In a lot of cases, this fishermen continue to survive thanks to the river, but the have had to swith fishing for the search of recyclable wastes. As you can see in the pictures, the little boats from where they used to throw their fishing nets now are used to sail the rubbish sea and pick everything that can be reused.
In spite of this terrible and sad situation, not everything is lost yet. Pollution is in the low part of the river, next to the city but everything else is in perfect conditions.
In the end of 2008 the Asian Bank of Development gave a package of loans to the government of Indonesia with the value of more than 500 million dolars for the restauration and cleaning of the river. The package will be delivered in a gradual way during the next fifteen years and will support proyects destined to the cleaning and construction of water treatment plants for the wastes in the river and to distribute drinking water to the population of poor families that use the polluted river to fish, bathroom and laundry and even to drink.
Having in mind that this mountains of rubbish are the only way of survival for hundreds of families, the loans will also be destined to create 25000 hectares of rice fields, delivering one hectare per family, which will result in 25000 new farmer families.
Let's hope that in a few years Citarum river will look clean and unpolluted all along and that these pictures will be just a bad memory.

The translation might be a little clumsy but I did it in a rush so...don´t judge me ok? =P! Please let´s learn from this and help make our world better and cleaner. If you see garbage, pick it up and place it in the garbage cans, don't waste water while your brushing your teeth or bathing, turn off your lights during the day, you don't need them. WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE STARTING WITH SMALL ACTIONS LIKE THIS ;)
Love, Wendy
